Problem with FT260 chip
« on: July 26, 2019, 01:49:43 PM »

Hi,

We have used FT260 chip as ordinary "USB to UART" converters in USB to RS485 application. In our application, we need COM port to be appeared in PC while connecting the FT260 to PC via USB. But it is only detecting as a HID device. We have built more number of boards with this chip.
-How can we make the chip to be appeared as COM port?.
-Whether we can we use this chip as ordinary USB to UART converter or this chip is only can be used in HID applications?
Could any one please help on this.

Hello,

The FT260 is a HID class device and does not provide a COM port. It may only be used in HID applications.

Our other family of ICs - USB to UART do create a COM Port. Have a look at our ICs Product Page here http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/ICs.htm where you will find, for example, the FT232R, FT230X, FT231X and FT234X.

Hi,

Thanks for your valuable reply!!!.
We know that other ICs will create COM port. But we have chosen the ft260 part for its higher baud rate and it is supporting the USB to RS485 application.

As per datasheet, It is clearly mentioned that, it should be used as USB to RS485 converter and also the application circuit is also provided for the same in datasheet.

So we have used this chip in our design and we have done lot of boards. The board contains many other sections also. So it will be a big cost impact for us, if we have to change the design only for this ftdi chip.

Is there any way in terms of software or hardware, so that we can use this device as a serial converter. Please help us to resolve the problem without going for design change.

Hello,

You are correct, you may use the FT260 as a USB to RS485 Converter, however, it does not provide a COM port.

Hi,
Great Thanks!!...
We understand that this chip can only be used in HID applications.
