Configuration of the FT233HPQ Eval board for external Vin

Hi there,

Can you explain me the method how to apply and use external Vin on this board. In the factory config the "Pass through mode" is active and when I connect an PD delivery capable charger to PD2 (sink only) port then its PDOs are offered to the device  connected to PD1. Hence, a power swap is initiated and the device connected to PD1 becomes a sink at the end. On the contrary, if I connected an external voltage to Vin or a non-PD capable charger to PD2 nothing happens. Obviously I need to switch of the "Pass through mode", but what else is needed to initiate a power swap on PD1?

Thanks,
Janos

hi Janos,

I am currently speaking with the R&D team about this. I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Hi,

Meantime I was able to figure out that using "External DC enable" solves the problem. If the 5V power turns on the FT232HPQ initiates a power role swap and becomes power source. This is good.

However, if I remove the DC power then the FT233HPQ shuts down (becasue it has no power). As soon as it lost the power, it will turn ON again and becomes a power sink. It negosiates the power and when this negotiation finished it again initiates the power swap (even though it has no DC power) so it will shut down once again and this loop runs forever.

I have a simple application which I would like to solve using FT233HPQ:

The FT233HPQ PD1 port is connected to the DRP device (a smart phone) which continously provides data and also sources the power to my device. Additionally, there is an ocassional external 5V power source which should be used to charge the phone. So if the 5V is present the FT233HPQ should become a source and should feed the smartphone. On the contrary if teh 5V is lost the FT233HPQ should immediately become a sink again and should be fed by the smartphone. Can I realize this operation using the proper configzration of the external EEPROM or I should use an external MCU and control the FT233HPQ via I2c?
Is there a documentation on the I2C control of the FT233HPQ?

Thanks,
Janos

Hi Janos,

This can be done through configuration change. The occasional external 5V source has to be on PD2 port for this purpose. The device can be configured such that when there is a PD2 supply, PD1 can initiate role swap.

Hi,

Thank you for the answer. The power ON side is working (5V appears at PD2 -> this initiate a power swap on PD1). Can you say something on the opposite? Is it possible to initiate a power swap again to prevent resetting of FT233HPQ?

Can you provide a document on the I2C programming of the FT233HPQ?

Thank you in advance.

Janos
